The Chicago Tribune reports that Urban Prep Academy for Young Men is announcing that all 107 seniors of the 2010 class were accepted into four year colleges across the nation.

Urban Prep is Chicago’s only public all-male, all Black high school, and opened its doors in 2006. Urban Prep’s school day is significantly longer compared to other Chicago public schools, and it requires over double the usual English credits for graduation. This year marks its first graduating class.

“I never had a doubt that we would achieve this goal,” said Tim King, Urban Prep’s CEO. “Every single person we hired knew from the day one that this is what we do: We get our kids into college.”

Hustletown readers: Despite such an encouraging story, Urban Prep has come under fire as taking a step backwards for education, for promoting a ‘segregated’ school body. Do you agree? Check out the Tribune’s article, and let us know your thoughts!

Opportunities continue to increase for Black students pursuing math and science related careers. In Phoenix, Arizona the Goodrich Foundation has awarded the Maricopa Community Colleges Foundation a $25,000 grant. The award will fund a new course at South Mountain Community College (SMCC) designed to encourage women and minority students to study science, math, technology and engineering. SMCC is a federally-designated Minority Serving Institution where over half of the student population comes from traditionally underserved ethnic groups.

Goodrich Foundation is the charitable arm of Goodrich Corporation, which is a Fortune 500 company and global supplier of systems and services to aerospace, defense and homeland security markets. For more information, visit http://www.goodrich.com.

South Mountain Community College serves more than 10,000 students each year, offering a wide range of associate degrees, certificates and transfer programs.

Innovative programs such as this allow for minority students to enter fields that may be less visible as career and entrepreneurial opportunities. Hustletown readers, is this grant money well spent, or would you rather see corporate funding dedicated to other initiatives?
