Spike Lee Pushes for More Black Male Educators

*Spike Lee and Education Secretary Arne Duncan came together Monday, calling for more Black male educators.

Lee, who is a Morehouse man, also recognized two of the most influential Black men in his life: two professors who mentored him through school.

It’s going to be a big campaign and there are at least 8,500 unfilled teaching jobs. There is financial aid and incentives out there for those ready to make the transition.

Entire Senior Class from Chicago High School is Accepted to College

The Chicago Tribune reports that Urban Prep Academy for Young Men is announcing that all 107 seniors of the 2010 class were accepted into four year colleges across the nation.

Urban Prep is Chicago’s only public all-male, all Black high school, and opened its doors in 2006. Urban Prep’s school day is significantly longer compared to other Chicago public schools, and it requires over double the usual English credits for graduation. This year marks its first graduating class.

“I never had a doubt that we would achieve this goal,” said Tim King, Urban Prep’s CEO. “Every single person we hired knew from the day one that this is what we do: We get our kids into college.”

Goodrich Foundation Awards $25,000 to Maricopa Community Colleges for Unique Engineering Course

Opportunities continue to increase for Black students pursuing math and science related careers. In Phoenix, Arizona the Goodrich Foundation has awarded the Maricopa Community Colleges Foundation a $25,000 grant. The award will fund a new course at South Mountain Community College (SMCC) designed to encourage women and minority students to study science, math, technology and engineering. SMCC is a federally-designated Minority Serving Institution where over half of the student population comes from traditionally underserved ethnic groups.

South Mountain Community College serves more than 10,000 students each year, offering a wide range of associate degrees, certificates and transfer programs.

Innovative programs such as this allow for minority students to enter fields that may be less visible as career and entrepreneurial opportunities.
