Spike Lee Pushes for More Black Male Educators

*Spike Lee and Education Secretary Arne Duncan came together Monday, calling for more Black male educators.

Lee, who is a Morehouse man, also recognized two of the most influential Black men in his life: two professors who mentored him through school.

It’s going to be a big campaign and there are at least 8,500 unfilled teaching jobs. There is financial aid and incentives out there for those ready to make the transition.

Study: HBCU Students Stronger in Technology and Math

While the relevancy of Black colleges and universities is often questioned in today’s (supposedly) post-racial era, a new study shows their presence is more important than ever. According to a U.S. Commission on Civil Rights study, students who attend Historically Black Colleges and Universities are more likely to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

The Commission’s annual study reported that HBCU students are more involved in their studies and faculty research projects than their counterparts at non-HBCU’s, who deal with more “academic mismatch.” This occurs when an admitted student’s qualifications fall below those of the median student in that program, and is a critical factor in attrition rates for science-related programs.

To combat the academic mismatch concern among non-HBCU college bound, the Commission suggested schools cease enrolling STEM students below the median credentials of students currently in the program. Read the full report here.

Forbes Ranks NYU-Poly in Top Ten for Diversity

Editors from Forbes ranked Polytechnic Institute of New York University among the Best Colleges for Women and Minorities in STEM and also as one of America’s Most Diverse Colleges.

The university ranked seventh for women and minorities enrolled in undergraduate STEM programs (science, technology, engineering and math). NYU-Poly was ranked sixth in ethnic and racial diversity.

“Producing more graduates with STEM degrees is an important goal for any college: The majors with the highest starting and mid-career salaries are nearly all STEM degrees, according to Payscale.com‘s 2010-2011 College Salary Report,” Forbes reported.

“Throughout our 156-year history, NYU-Poly has been a portal to success for the best and brightest technical students from Brooklyn and New York, traditionally among the most diverse immigrant hubs in America,” said NYU-Poly Provost Elizabeth Dianne Rekow. “By bringing together scholars with diverse outlooks and backgrounds, we find that research improves, and students benefit in their studies and their careers.”

RMHC Scholars Program for Philly High School Students: Deadline Jan 28, 2011

The Ronald McDonald House Charities is currently seeking minority students in the Greater Philadelphia region for the RMHC Scholars Program. Fifty total scholarships are awarded to qualified minority applicants, ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 each.

“RMHC scholarship winners are outstanding students who excel academically while proving leadership skills and a spirit of volunteerism in their communities,” said John Durante, president of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Philadelphia Region, via press release. “We are honored to have the opportunity to recognize their accomplishments and to help make their dream of a college education a reality.”

Applicants must submit a high school transcript, letter of recommendation and a personal statement detailing their background and community involvement. Apply online at www.rmhc.org by January 28, 2011. For additional information, please call the scholarship hotline at (215) 790-4320.
