Being a proud Gary, Indiana native, it’s only fitting that we feature this article about Katie Washington, Notre Dame’s first black valedictorian. She attended West Side High School in G.I., not my own Lew Wallace High School, but we’re still very proud of her and wish her nothing but continued success as she pursues graduate and doctoral studies at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Maryland.
