The word is out when it comes to African American buying power. The drug store chain Walgreens is introducing the Community Corner program during Black History Month, in an effort to “reflect support of minority-owned businesses with products that are produced by African Americans.”

The link to the new initiative displays products such as relaxer, bump cream, and loc wax. Prominent African American-owned magazines such as Ebony, Black Enterprise, Jet, and The Source will also be displayed.
African-American vendors will have the opportunity to feature their products throughout Black History Month. On February 5 and 6, select Walgreens locations will host special events featuring products from these vendors, along with trial and sample offers.
The Community Corner initiative will expand to include the products of businesses owned by women, Hispanic Americans, Native Americans and Asian Americans later in the year.
“Walgreens outreach programs foster an environment that enhances the development of a diverse group of entrepreneurs,” said director of supplier diversity, Gleatha Glispie. “We plan to promote wider vendor participation throughout the year, and in this way, help support the economic base of the communities we serve across our 7,100 stores.”
Walgreens is also fostering relationships with the National Minority Supplier Development Council and the National Urban League in efforts to increase exposure in minority markets.
