According to the Associated Press, The Michael Vick Project will debut Feb. 2 on BET. The ten-part series will chronicle the much maligned NFL quarterback, who was reinstated to the league this season and signed a two year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Vick’s conviction for dog fighting charges and subsequent 18-month sentence is one of the most complete falls from grace ever experienced by a professional athlete. Recent allegations over steroid use are not helping his comeback.
Black professional athletes in particular face intense media scrutiny, and bad decision making in concern to negative publicity is a career killer. On BET.com, Vick explained his reasons for agreeing to the series.
“I am not doing this documentary to show people that I’m back and unchanged by the experiences of the last few years,” said Vick. “I’m allowing the cameras to see the truth – the good, the bad, and the ugly results of my decisions – with the sincere hope that it will positively affect others’ lives and prevent someone out there from making the same mistakes I did.”
The Eagles can choose to keep Vick through 2010 for $5 million.
