Politician, broadcaster, entrepreneur, and “true hero to African Americans in New York City and around the county” as stated by President Barack Obama, Percy Sutton died at the age of 89 on Sunday according to CNN.
Sutton was a Texas native who became an attorney after working with the Tuskeegee Airmen. He represented Malcolm X and the Shabazz family. He entered politics later and became a broadcasting and media legend who launched the first radio chain targeting a black listening audience. Sutton is also credited with reopening the famed Apollo theater, Harlem landmark.
